Hope you have some fun making this toy fish from CD with your kid!
To prepare the materials, the main item is the old or used CD. If you happen to have some old CDs, you can use them all to make this handmade toy fish. The complete supplies for this project are listed below.
- Old CDs
- Hot melt glue gun
- Small googly eyes
- Fish fin templates
- Craft papers or cardstocks
- Permanent markers
Take one CD and use the permanent marker to draw the fish body as shown in the picture. Make sure to draw on the sparkling side of the CD to make your toy fish much more attractive. Draw small and equal sized curves all over the CD surface. Leave it for awhile to let the drawing dry.
Take the fish fin template. If you don’t have it, you can download from the internet first and print it. Cut the template with the scissors. Then, use each template to draw the fish fin onto the cardstock. Place the template on the cardstock and block the pattern.
After all fin templates are being copied onto the cardstock, you can cut them all. If you want to make more than one toy fish, you can cut more fish fins from several cardstocks. Make sure that the size of two dorsal fins is exactly the same.
Now, it’s time to make the pectoral fin. Take the craft paper sized ¼ sheet. Fold this paper as to make an accordion fold. It means you have to fold a small bit of the paper then up, down, up, down and so forth until it is fully folded.
Now, line up all parts of the fish that you have made so far on the table. Check if you have all parts as shown in the picture.
Take the paper which is being folded later on. Glue on part of the fan edge as if you make the fan. This fan will be used as the fish pectoral fins and is being inserted into the center of CD.
Now, it is time to glue all the fins onto the CD. Set the CD down to make the label facing up. Arrange the position of the fins on top of the CD and then glue them all using the hot glue gun.
The look of your toy fish should be like in the picture. Make some necessary adjustments if needed.
The next step is to insert the pectoral fins. Insert the part that is being folded and glued into the center of CD hole. Glue this part on the back side of the CD to make it attached stronger. Then, make one small circle out of the craft paper and cut it. Make sure than this circle able to cover the surrounding hole of the CD. Glue it to cover the hole as well as the pectoral fins.
The last step is to attach the small googly eye onto the CD. The final look of the toy fish is like in the picture. Your handmade toy fish out of CD is ready. You can use it to decorate your room if you want to.
